There are many bargains to be had on eBay and jewelry is no exception. The basics to buying on eBay are pretty straightforward. Register for an account, browse the auctions, place a bid, and pay promptly if you win. But when you’re buying fine jewelry such as a gorgeous new tennis bracelet, you’ll want to take some extra precautions. Here are my seven steps to safety when buying fine jewelry on eBay.
- Read the auction listing. All of it, every word! Sellers usually include a host of helpful information here and after the auction, you will be held responsible for having read and agreed to every word.
- Ask Questions. As many as necessary to know exactly what you’re buying. You need to know cut, clarity, origin; everything you would ask in the local fine jewelry store. Be sure to ask your questions before you bid! If the seller doesn’t respond promptly and thoroughly, don’t bid on that auction.
- Know what you’re buying. Research the type of jewelry and stone(s) you wish to purchase so you know what questions to ask and how much to pay.
- Check seller’s feedback. Don’t just look at the number, click on the number to get more detail and to read comments from past customers. For high dollar purchases, consider contacting the better business bureau in the seller’s state.
- Bid responsibly – don’t get swept up in the thrill of the auction process, just bid what you are willing to pay (don’t forget to consider shipping costs).
- Pay promptly with a credit card. I always recommend buying with American Express because in my experience, they are the most helpful with any after-purchase issues that might come up. Debit cards and paypal bank transfers may not offer as much protection so check with your bank’s information. Also be sure to select insurance if it is not included in the shipping cost.
- Upon arrival, immediately inspect the item. If you have any concerns, contact the seller and have it appraised.
